What I Realized as a CASA Volunteer

In honor of National Volunteer Week, we’re highlighting various stories from our volunteers, here in Anne Arundel County. Learn more about how you can become a volunteer and make a difference in the life of a foster child.

My name is Lisa Foster and I have been a CASA volunteer for 10 years. My one and only case was a 13-year old girl, that has now aged out of foster care–she is currently 23 years old.

I became a CASA to be the change I wanted to see in the world and be a part of the solution, not the problem.

Being a CASA volunteer has shown me how important it is to have someone dedicated to making sure nothing is missed during a child’s time in foster care. Having to navigate through an unknown situation is very traumatic for adults–you can only imagine how a child must feel!

As a CASA volunteer, I realized very quickly on that showing up and being present established the trust and consistency my assigned child needed during her time in care. As her volunteer, I tried to be the light–to give my CASA child the reassurance that she is deserving of, so she knows that she is loved and enough.

We may be the only family support a child has in foster care and after aging out.
