Volunteer Spotlight: Patsy Baker Blackshear
Introducing our new series featuring our amazing and dedicated CASA volunteers! Get to know the individuals supporting our mission and working tirelessly to support foster care children in our community.
When did you get involved with CASA?
Patsy became a CASA volunteer because of her experiences working with young people in the Job Corps during college. She saw many kids leaving secure placements without the support they needed, and she wanted to help. In 2021, she decided to become a CASA volunteer to make a real difference in the lives of children who don’t have family support.
What has been your most rewarding moment as a CASA?
One of the most rewarding moments for Patsy as a CASA volunteer came when a young person she worked with expressed appreciation for the support she provided. After months of building trust, the child opened up to Patsy, sharing how much her consistent presence meant to them. This moment reminded Patsy why she became a volunteer in the first place: to be the steady, supportive figure in the lives of children who might not have anyone else.
What do you think are the qualities of an effective CASA?
Patsy shared that being a good CASA volunteer requires patience and persistence. It takes time to build trust with kids, and the work can be challenging. She also emphasized that volunteers need to balance their CASA responsibilities with other parts of their lives and be ready to commit to the role for the long term.
How do you build trust with the children of CASA?
Building trust with children in the foster care system requires patience and active listening. Patsy explained that these children often have emotional barriers due to past traumas, and it takes time for them to open up. The key is to meet the children where they are emotionally and to listen to them without judgment. Once trust is established, the relationship blossoms, and the impact of a CASA volunteer can be truly transformative for the child.
Can you talk about your passion for advocacy, and the importance of the role of CASA Volunteers?
Patsy’s desire to help kids in foster care comes from her own background of having strong family support. She believes that children in the system deserve the same kind of care and attention. As a CASA volunteer, she advocates for the children she works with, helping to make sure they get the support they need. She hopes more people will understand how important CASA volunteers are and consider joining to help these kids.
